Top 5 National Day songs of all time
You may be unhappy with Singapore due to the large number of ERPs, inflation or the influx of immigrants. However, you cannot deny the fact that all Singaporeans still come together during National Day because this is still a place we call HOME.
When I was a kid, I would stay at home on the 9 August just to catch the live telecast of the NDP live show. The highlight for me would always be the annual National Day songs and the fireworks. NDP celebration in school is always fun as all of us get together in red to sing songs that everyone can relate to.
It has been awhile since we had a National Day song that everyone can remembers after a few years down the road. Yes, some of them may be nice but they are forgettable. I wonder if it is the publicity or that schools today still refuse to play the new songs since the older ones are considered to be a more popular choice. To exacerbate the situation, last year's song 'One Singapore' has got almost 3,000 dislikes. It received many complaints saying it is unbearable. I got to admit that the rapping part was really redundant and lame.
I feel that it's a pity the committee decided not to have a theme song this year as Singapore really has talented songwriters that are able to come up with nice theme songs although it might not be as successful as before. Personally, I feel that a good NDP song should be about dreams and about how Singaporeans can stand by and support each other through thick and thin despite the midst of social-cultural changes that we are facing. The MV of the song is also another instrumental factor that producers should take note of.
Here are my top 5 National Day songs of all time! Tell me what's your favorite too!
5. There's No Place I Rather Be (2007) by Kit Chan
This song is really special to me. It may be due to the fact that I was involved in that year's NDP. But I believe many people that are abroad would be able to resonate well with the lyrics of the song. Travelling may be fun. You may like the food in Taiwan, Sakura in Japan, the Eiffel Tower or Kimchi. But there's only one place where your family and friends are at and also not to forget your favourite Char Kway Teow, Satay and Hokkien Mee.
4.Reach out for the Skies (2005) by Rui En and Taufik Batisah
This ought to be one of the more refreshing song and duet! I remember myself doing the dance with my friends back in 2005! NDP song should be vibrant and fun!
This is one of the BEST NDP songs in my opinion. Till today, you can still see Taufik and Rui En performing this tract in various locations during National Day.
3. Count on me Singapore (1986)
Old but Gold. This is one song that you would hear every single year be it in school or even during NDP. Although this song was penned way before I was born, those of my generation and even those younger than me can still sing it! What more can we ask for?!
2. We Will Get There (2002) by Stephanie Sun
Love the voice, the tune and the lyrics.
"Look where we are, we've come so far" A song about belief and how we struggled through the darkest storm to reach where we are today. From a fishing village to a first world country. One other reason why this song is successful is because Stephanie sang it so well!
1. Home (1998) by Kit Chan
Doubt anyone will disagree with me. Together with Dick Lee, Kit Chan managed to put this song right through the hearts of all Singaporeans. The lyrics are meaningful and this is ONE song that everyone can sing from the beginning to the end. I even sang this during my route march when I was in BMT! This shows how much this song means to every Singaporean (son).
16 years but still going STRONG.

<Sponsored Advertorial>
Effiell is a Singapore based clothing retail founded just
months ago in April 2014. Their aim is to provide a new platform for Men to
shop due to the lack of online local stores in Singapore. Just a click away,
you would be able to get yourself the trendiest shirts at affordable price.
Effiell sponsored me some apparels to try on first so I am
able to write a good and honest review on them.
First of all, I am quite a small guy. Thus, it is quite hard
for me to get clothes of my size even if it is an “S”size. They are often too
long or too loose. Effiell shirts however, fits me perfectly. So for the smaller
builds out there, rest assure that the “S”size from them would not be oversize.
I always believe that you don’t have to spend a lot to get a
good quality shirt (other items applies as well). The vests, tees and shirts
are sold at a very reasonable price! The price ranges from around $20 to $36.
This is actually considered cheap for men clothing. In addition, even though it
is sold at an affordable price, the quality of the shirts is not compromised
(I’m serious!). Most of the apparels are made from cotton so rest assure it
would not shrink and it would definitely be comfortable.
I love their long sleeves shirt as they have more special
colours than the usual black, gray and white. They offer colours like maroon
and copper which I think is more special and unique. The shirts are suitable
for both formal and informal occasions as well. The prints for their tees are
also very popular at the moment. DAEBAK! J
Scroll down to see pictures of their awesome apparels and how I match it in my OWN way.
Scroll to the bottom for discount code and other offers!
This top is one of my favorite.
Copper colour shirt is more uncommon and more unique!
The reason I picked this top from them is because I think this tee shirt is uniquely Effiell. They got their logo all over the shirt and it is nice! This kinda tee shirt design is actually very trendy at the moment.
Some behind the scenes shot while taking pictures for this outfit! It's simple and definitely a good choice for school and casual wear.
One of my favorites. It looks good be it being long sleeve or if you fold it up to be a short sleeve shirt. Smart look even when I'm wearing it with shorts!
This is something that I feel every guy should have in their wardrobe.
The colour is not too fanciful which some people might avoid. In fact, this colour can be matched easily with any other colours.
This casual wear will never go wrong.
Roll up your tee shirt to look trendier and more fitting. Rolling it up will create the impression that your arms are actually bigger than usual.
Most importantly, their Tee shirt is comfortable!
Wearing a short sleeves shirt with a staple colour shorts will never go wrong.
You can either button it up or wear it as the outer layer with a shirt inside. I opted for a plain white shirt as I wanted the shirt to be the main thing instead of just complementing the tee shirt.
Lastly, a Retro look.
Like Effiell, I believe that confidence is key in pulling of an outfit of certain styles and it is not necessarily about clothes.
Check out their website www.effiell.com and Instagram @effiellsg to see their full range of collection.
Effiell would be giving my readers and followers 10% of your total bill when you quote "GUANWEI10".
THAT'S NOT ALL! The store is having a 30% discount store wide at the moment till 28th July. That means if you quote me, you will be entitled to a 30% + 10% discount!!
I swear the shirts are worth the amount you pay and I encourage you guys out there to shop now as stocks are running low.
HAPPY SHOPPING!!!

Review: Becasse and Maple & Market Bakery Cafe
I'm BACK! Today I would be doing a review on Becasse Bakery and Maple & Market Bakery Cafe! (Mainly desserts, pastries etc.)
Becasse
Ion Orchard #04-27-32
10am - 10pm daily
Located in ION, Beccase
is an Australian brand that is being brought in by Jones the Grocer. Becasse is
a French inspired luxury brand and the new store here in Ion will lead the
brand’s further expansion into Singapore, Asia and beyond. Becasse's pastries
are handcrafted in house so you would expect high quality pastries from this
place.
High Tea set is
available from 3pm-6pm. I have yet to try it yet but my friend told me that the
High Tea set is super good for the price you pay. She was the one that
introduced this place to me as she was invited by ION for food tasting.
There are also wide varieties of special leaf teas to choose from.
There are many different varieties of pastries to choose from
This french crepe costs $9
The crepe was nice and it wasn’t very sweet. I’m someone who doesn’t really like sweet stuffs. Thus, it bothers me a lot if the desserts are too sweet but this is really just nice. The additional berries make this dessert slightly a healthier choice too.
Banana Tart with Salted Peanut Brittle - $4.90. Most of the Patisseries are of the same price.
Classy setting
Firstly, I got to say that the service was good and the ambience of the place is even better! The place is really classy and atas as the store has its origins in high-end pastisserie and bakery. Accompanied with the restaurant’s setting, it is designed to make you feel like you are dining in Paris!
Another picture of myself while eating the tart.
Maple & Market Bakery Café
34 Cassia Crescent, #01-82
Tel: +65 6348 8068 Mon: 12pm – 8pm Wed to Fri: 12pm – 9pm Sat: 10am – 10pm Sun: 10am – 9pm
Maple & Market Bakery Café is located at Cassia Crescent and just 5 minutes walk from Old Airport Road Food Market. A humble store in and old neighbourhood, the café boasts delicious and mouth watering pastries and waffles (YES, THE WAFFLES ARE AWESOME)!!
This little humble bakery cafe
When I first stepped into the café, I was like “Shit, this café is really very very small!”Indeed, the café is only able to accommodate up to 12 customers at a time. Thus, orders and takeaways are encouraged unless you have the time to wait for the seats. The café is super cosy. Nice decorations and the availability of many books and magazines (doesn’t matter if you use it to read or for photo-taking).
Part of the decorations on the table. Gives off a cottage-feel!
The cakes are nicely displayed and I was standing there with my friends for a good 10 minutes just to decide which one to get as all of them look awesome! And yes, they do not serve mains here; just waffle, pastries and drinks.
I wanted to order the Rootbeer Cake with Pistachio but my friend don't really like Pistachio :(
The cakes are all so pretty
I ordered the MYCC Blossom (the last slice) and it was really good. The sweetness and texture was really just nice.
In all, all the cakes are just lovely and you guys should just try all of them.
Blossoms
That said, I preferred their waffle more than the pastries. In fact, I think their waffles are even nicer than Stranger’s Reunion waffle!
This Caramalized Bananas, Walnuts and Homemade Caramel Sauce Buttermilk Waffles cost only $9 and it is worth every penny of it. Every bite of it accompanied with a sip of mocha is the definition of
LIFE.
EXCELLENT WAFFLES! MUST HAVE!
A cup of mocha is a MUST to perk you up on a lazy afternoon.
